Summer School „Lightweight Structures“, with support by DAAD and Altair, taking place at Biberach University of Applied Sciences with guests from NTNU Trondheim. Students of architecture and structural engineering from the two Universities cooperated during this five-day workshop. Taking off with two excursion days to Munich (Olympic park and stadium, „BMW Welt“) and Stuttgart (Institute of Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design, Institute of Computational Design), the students then worked in groups of two using both digital and analog design tools.

On the first workshop day, an introduction to the topology optimization software „SolidThinking Inspire“ was given by Jan Grasmannsdorf from Altair. The students then started to develop their own design projects, dealing with stuctures varying in scale from chair to bridge and skyscraper structures. An experimental study on day two was an opportunity to reflect on the structural geometries from a different viewpoint. All the insights were then merged into a design project with great results after only two intense days of workshop. Both the students and the supervisors were enchanted and inspired by this special teaching event.
